3D epoxy floor materials
Epoxy is a material that can be used for many applications. As a flooring material, epoxy is often used to fix structural problems. It can also be used to create decorative patterns or designs. To install the 3D floor, you need the following epoxy floor materials:
- The canvass or 3D image
- Cleaning supplies to remove dirt and dust
- Plastic roller to distribute the resin
- Plastic squeegee for smoothing the canvas
- Epoxy resin
- A hardener
- A self-leveling primer.
Epoxy 3D floor installation
Before installing the 3D floor design, make sure the substrate must be absolutely flat. This means it cannot have any unevenness. If there are bumps or undulations on the floor, they will be reflected in the 3D illusion and this is what causes the “ghosting” effect. This is why it is so important to have a perfectly flat floor before putting down 3D flooring. So how to install 3D flooring? Simply follow these steps:
- Be sure to apply and work in a well-ventilated area. Use the appropriate wear personal protective equipment such as vinyl gloves, nitrile gloves (particle or low-emission), paper, and disposable shoe covers.
- Prepare the substrate surface. Clean the concrete floor and remove any loose materials, stripping, or waxes. Remove any dust with a vacuum cleaner for a clean-sweep look.
- Protect the surface with a self-leveling epoxy primer and let it dry, then brush a coat of paint over the top 1 sq. cm (approx. 1/4 inch) at a time until you are satisfied with the coverage.
- For a large area: Pour an even layer of small beads onto your prepared surface from one edge (do not pour over 5 ft of the edge). Push them into the crack with a squeegee to minimize work time and bubbles.
- For a small area: Pour an even layer of beads onto your prepared surface, slowly wet it with a foam brush in a circular motion to minimize work time and bubbles.
- After the epoxy dries (24 hours), lightly wet the hardened surface with warm water and scrub the surface with light pressure from a bristle brush to clean off any residual from the previous step. Re-wet areas where necessary. Fill in cracks with putty or sanding sealer before filling can be done for the best results.
- Lightly sand the entire floor according to the manufacturer’s specifications before priming, sealing, or painting the floor.
- Use water-based, low odor, non-toxic products where necessary for accidents and clean up. Protect basement and crawl space areas when painting before the epoxy dries
- Polish floors with a soft cloth or dampened mop according to manufacturers’ instructions for high gloss shine.
- Wax floors are permanent in that they do not need to be re-applied after curing according to the manufacturer’s directions. Their maintenance is more intensive as they must be kept free of debris such as dirt, grit, gravel, etc. Stains can be removed with ammonia and warm water if necessary according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
3D Flooring can improve the design features of an otherwise monotonous or sterile-looking space by creating interesting patterns on the floor much like 3D floor murals.
The patterns are created by combining various colors of resin with different colors of aggregate. Some of the more common aggregate colors are red, brown, yellow, and green. Combining these colors with a variety of resin colors creates virtually unlimited pattern possibilities.
